Report with most recent key figures concerning energy available
The most recent version of the Energy Key Data report was published last month. Below, we will go over the most important and relevant insights from the perspective of the blue economy.
Offshore wind energy
Partly thanks to offshore wind farms, wind energy has become the most important source of renewable electricity. In 2019, the construction of new (offshore) wind farms caused a significant increase in primary energy production.
In the same year, offshore wind farms produced 4.8 TWh of renewable electricity and provided over 1.3 million households with power (based on an annual consumption of 3,500 kWh for an average household).
Moreover, offshore wind energy accounted for 49.3% of the total wind power production, even though it only accounted for 40.3% of the total installed wind capacity.
However, the increase in total installed wind capacity does not necessarily lead to an increase in electricity production, mainly because of its weather-dependent character.
